THE COPA DEL REY STORY
As Europeans colonized regions of the new world, they planted grape vines by order of the King. And the best wines grown from these plantings were reserved for the king, hence Copa del Rey.
Now, the Nicolaus Hahn and Canavaggio families have partnered to create the innovative wine brand Copa del Rey. The brand is the brainchild of Panamanian Juan Carlos Canavaggio and Hahn Family Wines President Bill Leigon, founder of brands such as Rex Goliath and Cycles Gladiator. Both wanted to offer the world a wine that would be sophisticated yet accessible to everyone. They assembled the best winemaking team available, then sought the best vineyards to make this dream a reality.
The Copa del Rey winemaking team, led by Chilean born Juan José Verdina and well known California consultant Barry Gnekow, concluded Chile would be the ideal location for Copa del Rey because of its Mediterranean climate and well defined appellations. After extensive research they chose the Colchagua Valley for Copa del Rey Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo Valley for Copa del Rey Merlot and Rapel Valley for Copa del Rey Chardonnay.
Although located on different sides of the Equator, the similarities between California and Chile provided the ideal conditions for sharing ideas. Chile and California share rich agricultural traditions, multiple wine regions and a moderate climate. Yet they both have very diverse histories and cultures. Copa del Rey wines express the blending of the people, the land and wine making techniques to deliver the best wine possible.
The result is fruit forward and elegant wines that reflect the qualities of their appellations. We are sure Copa del Rey will fulfill the expectations of the most discerning palate. From Chile, by order of the king, El Rey is you!
